Since 2009, STRIDE's "Capital District Sled Warriors” Sled Hockey Team  have been a proud addition to the STRIDE family of sports.

What is Sled Hockey?

Sled hockey is a competitive team sport played on ice while seated in a sled. Similar to ice hockey, a sled is used in place of skates. Two hockey skate blades are attached underneath the sled which is propelled by a player who uses two picks. Picks are shortened hockey sticks (1/3 the length of a regulation hockey stick) with metal teeth at the end of the stick. Players use their picks in place of a hockey stick to pass, stickhandle, shoot the puck and propel their sled across the ice.

Though the sled is designed for people with lower extremity disabilities, people without disabilities may also participate.

How do I participate in Sled Hockey?

The team is currently seeking new membersThere is no commitment to participate.  Players should feel free to try it once or join the team!

Practices are held on a weekend day. Tournaments and games are determined pre-season.  Team members receive a uniform, but need to have their own helmet, neck guard, shoulder pads, gloves, elbow pads and shin guards. It is recommended to have sturdy shoes or old ice hockey boots (without blades) to protect your feet.

What are the fees to participate?

A $30 dues fee to USA Hockey covers a jersey with your name & number (returned at season's end), USA Hockey insurance, ice time for games and practice, referees, a sled and sticks (returned at season's end).
