STRIDE's Programs are the core of what we do and what makes
STRIDE so much fun!
Skiing and snowboarding
This program is the nucleus of STRIDE, and is based at Jiminy Peak
Resort in Hancock, Massachusetts, Catamount Mountain in Hillsdale, NY
and Ski Sundown in New Hartford CT. Our
professionally trained and certified staff of 70+ instructors teach over
900
adaptive lessons each season.
Camp STRIDE
Beginning in the fall of 1990 this program was started by a group of
eight campers and a dozen volunteers who spent a weekend in tents. The
success of the camping program paved the way for a warm-weather
activity, and the camping trips have been hugely popular ever since.
This program has grown to four weekend trips starting in June,
with dozens of campers and volunteers enjoying the outdoors of state
campgrounds.
Biking
Through a program called
Lose the Training Wheels, STRIDE is partnering with Down Syndrome
Resource Center and the Albany Autism Society to host this unique
program. Two weeks of this unique program in July at Hudson Valley Community
College and Union College. A excellent opportunity for the child
with special needs to learn how to ride a bike.
Bowling
The bowling program began in the summer of 1994, and is offered for 10
weeks during the fall, winter, and 8 weeks during the spring. All games
are held at Bowling Green, in East Greenbush,
NY. A perennial favorite, our bowlers return season after season, for
the strikes, trophies, fun, and pizza parties!
Adaptive Baseball
In its first year, 1991, the Twin Town Little League Challenge Division
represented two small teams, and now four challenger teams are filled
with baseball players of all ages. The program is hosted in North
Greenbush, NY.
Sailing
A one-of- a-kind curriculum, STRIDE offers the chance to learn to sail
on rigged sloops, after five weeks of indoor classroom instruction
followed by a weekend of sailing at YMCA's Camp CHINGACHGOOK on Lake
George, NY.
Our second sailing program is hosted in West Chester County at the New
Rochelle Marina in New Rochelle, NY. The program offers classroom
instruction and weekend sailing trip hosted by the New York Sailing
School.
And our third sailing program is going to be hosted
in the Berkshires. This is a very popular program that continues
to grow.
Snowshoeing and Cross Country
Skiing
Snowshoeing and Nordic skiing are more aerobic then walking, as
snowshoes sink slightly into soft powder and cross country skis glide
in tracks. They are graceful and thrilling athletic endeavors. This is
an experience and opportunity with only positive results and maximum
enjoyment. Hosted at Pine Ridge in Poestenkill, NY.
Swimming
Our recreational swimming program is hosted at the Capital District YMCA
in East Greenbush, NY. With a second program offered at the Bethlehem
YMCA. The program is designed for participants to play
or have informal one-on-one swim instructions from our adult swimming
volunteers. It is offered four seasons per year for ten week sessions.
Project STRIDE
It starts out with a special curriculum with "dryland" training in
the fall and culminates in winter field trips that let students put
their newfound knowledge to the test on real ski slopes. Geared toward
youths ages 5 through 21 who qualify for special education services and who participate in adaptive physical education classes, the
program has grown over the years.
Special Events
STRIDE offers special events such as our Teen Dances and Whitewater
rafting trip on the upper Hudson River. New Events are being added every
year.
Golf
Premiered in the Summer of 2007, this exciting new STRIDE program runs
for 8 weeks at Route Fore Golf Center in North Greenbush. It
offers Professional golf instruction both in the classroom and on the
range. The program culminates with a scramble format
tournament outing which includes the use of electric carts. An awards
ceremony follows with a picnic to celebrate the kids achievement.
